Indonesian Embassy in Moscow and ASEAN Center Hold “Day of Indonesia in MGIMO”

The Indonesian Embassy in Moscow and the ASEAN Center of Moscow State Institute of International Relations University (MGIMO) held a “Day of Indonesia in MGIMO” (DOIIM) event themed “Indonesia’s Role as a Leader in the Turbulent World.”

A press release from the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow received in Bandarlampung on Tuesday mentioned that the event on Wednesday (27/3) was attended by 100 participants from among students, staff of the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow and MGIMO, and Indonesianists. The DOIIM event was divided into academic sessions and cultural sessions.

The academic session of DOIIM began with a moment of silence for the terrorist act at Moscow’s Crocus City Hall that killed 137 people and injured more than 150.

After opening remarks by MGIMO Vice Chancellor Andrey Bayko as the host, Indonesian Ambassador to the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus Jose Antonio Morato Tavares expressed his gratitude for organizing the event and gave a brief presentation on the background of Indonesia’s foreign policy and leadership in the region.

“Rowing between two reefs, which was coined by Muhammad Hatta on September 2, 1948, is the foundation of Indonesia’s free and active foreign policy. This foundation is still relevant today in maintaining Indonesia’s sovereignty in the midst of the current world geopolitical situation,” Ambassador Tavares said.

Opening remarks were also given by Deputy Director of Asia-3 of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Sergey Tolchenov and DCM of the Russian Embassy in Jakarta Veronika Novoseltseva.

Previously, Dr. Muhadi Sugiono, a lecturer at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) who was invited by the ASEAN Center gave a public lecture regarding his views on the history of Indonesia’s leadership in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and Indonesia’s leadership role in the context of today’s global transformation.

The DOIIM academic session was followed by a hybrid discussion, with speakers Dewi Fortuna Anwar from BRIN, Victor Sumsky and Nikita Kuklin from the ASEAN Center, Yose Rizal Damuri Executive Director of CSIS Indonesia, Muhadi Sugiono and Lukman Nul Hakim from UGM, and moderator Ekaterina Koldunova.

The speakers exchanged ideas on the latest developments in international relations and cooperation between Indonesia and Russia, the impact of the presidential election on Indonesia’s foreign policy, Russia’s and Indonesia’s approaches to ASEAN, and other issues of regional development and global transformation.

The DOIIM cultural session featured dances Pendet (Bali), Bajidor Kahot (West Java), Merak (West Java), and Piring (West Sumatra) by Russian and Indonesian citizens, members of the Kirana Nusantara Dance dance studio assisted by the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow, as well as a performance of the Indonesian-language drama “Legend of Sangkuriang” (with Russian translation) by Russian students of the Indonesian studies class at MGIMO.

“The Indonesian dance was very good and I am interested in joining the Indonesian Embassy’s dance group. While dancing, I can also improve my Indonesian,” said Irina, a student of MGIMO’s Indonesian class.

MGIMO is a leading university that has produced many top diplomats from Russia and CIS countries, such as the President of Azerbaijan, President of Kazakhstan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova.

Since 2022 MGIMO has provided scholarships for five Indonesian students in master’s programs. According to the 2021 QS World University ranking by subject, out of 1453 campuses from 157 countries in the world, MGIMO ranks 1st in Russia and 41st in the world in “Politics and International Relations”; 151st in “Modern languages”; 201st in “Social Science and Management.”

There are 170 universities in Russia in the QS World of Rankings, with various rankings.
