Brazil Emphasizes Support for ASEAN Centrality

Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to ASEAN Henrique Archanjo Ferraro reaffirmed Brazil’s support for the centrality of ASEAN and the country’s commitment to advancing relations with ASEAN and its member states.

Ambassador Ferraro conveyed this support when he presented a Letter of Credence to ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn at the ASEAN Headquarters in Jakarta on Thursday.

Ambassador Ferarro also expressed his commitment to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the Southern Common Market (ASEAN-MERCOSUR) and ASEAN-Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) relationship frameworks that play an important role in maintaining regional peace and promoting common development.

Secretary-General Kao also congratulated Ambassador Ferraro on his inauguration and emphasized that Ambassador Ferraro’s appointment as Brazil’s first Ambassador to ASEAN demonstrates Brazil’s strong commitment to strengthening the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership.

Going forward, Secretary-General Kao encouraged both sides to continue exploring possibilities for cooperation in areas of mutual benefit and interest, in line with the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Practical Areas of Cooperation (2024-2028), including in the areas of trade and investment, energy, food security, as well as science, technology and innovation.

Brazil approved the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in 2012.

In 2022, the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting conferred ASEAN Sectoral Dialogue Partner status to Brazil.

The 2nd ASEAN-Brazil Joint Sectoral Cooperation Committee (AB-JSCC) held on December 14, 2023 adopted the ASEAN-Brazil Sectoral Dialogue Partnership: Areas of Practical Cooperation (2024-2028) which will serve as a practical guide to strengthen cooperation between the two sides.
