The Indonesian Consulate in Songkhla, Thailand, repatriated 28 Indonesian fishermen from Aceh on March 14 and 15, 2024 via the Phuket-Jakarta route, to be handed over to relevant agencies in Indonesia before returning to their respective hometowns.

Based on KRI Songkhla’s written statement on Friday, the fishermen are crew members of KM. Cahaya Putera 02 and KM. Salsabila which were arrested in late August 2023 by Thai authorities for illegal fishing in the Andaman Sea around Phuket Province, Thailand.

“They served a custodial sentence in lieu of fines for approximately six months and were released on March 12, 2024,” said KRI Songkhla.

During the legal process in Phuket Province, KRI Songkhla provided assistance and coordination with Thai law enforcement officials.

Currently, there are still 41 fishermen from three fishing boats from Aceh Province who are serving imprisonment in lieu of fines at the Phuket Provincial Penitentiary.

Thai authorities have so far imposed penalties in the form of ship destruction and fines on Indonesian fishermen caught conducting illegal fishing activities in Thai waters.

“The fishermen who are unable to pay the fines are then required to undergo body confinement in lieu of fines,” said KRI Songkhla.
