ASEAN Discusses Human Rights Implementation and Human Trafficking Through AICHR Forum

ASEAN countries through the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) discussed the implementation of a program on human rights and human trafficking that will be one of the focuses of activities in 2024.

The ASEAN Secretariat in a statement received by Indonesia Window here on Sunday said that the agreement was discussed at the 38th AICHR forum which took place on February 20-23 in Vientiane, Laos and aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Chairperson of AICHR, who is the Lao Representative to AICHR, Ambassador Yong Chanthalangsy highlighted achievements in the implementation of the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and mapped out the future direction of ASEAN under the Lao chairmanship in 2024.

The Lao Chairmanship of ASEAN 2024 carries the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience”. Yong called for collective efforts in strengthening the ASEAN Community, as well as the promotion and protection of human rights.

Then, each member of the forum, namely AICHR Representatives/Alternate Representatives from Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, provided updates on the development of human rights efforts in their respective countries in the region, including new laws, regulations, and human rights initiatives.

The forum also discussed priority programs in the fields of environment and climate change, rights of persons with disabilities, children’s rights, and poverty eradication.

Institutional matters were also discussed, including the mid-term review of the AICHR Five-Year Work Plan 2021-2025, measures to strengthen the governance of the AICHR Fund and external funding to AICHR, preparation for the development of the AICHR Five-Year Work Plan.

Also discussed were the 2026-2030 plan and possible AICHR inputs to the development of the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 Strategic Plan led by the High Level Task Force on the ASEAN Community Vision Post-2025 (HLTF-ACV).

AICHR also held its 3rd interface meeting with the ASEAN Environmental Rights Working Group (AER-WG) to discuss the progress of developing a regional framework on environmental rights in ASEAN. AICHR also provided guidance to the AER-WG on the development of the framework.
