Sultan of Johor Officially Becomes the 17th King of Malaysia

The Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, officially became the 17th King of Malaysia after taking the oath of office and signing a declaration in a traditional ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday (Jan 31).

The ceremony marked the start of Sultan Ibrahim’s five-year reign as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

At the 263rd Special Meeting of the Ruling Council at Istana Negara on October 27, 2023, he was elected King of Malaysia to succeed Al Sultan Abdullah who completed his term on Tuesday.

In taking the oath, which was also broadcast online, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim pledged to govern justly, vigorously safeguard and defend the purity of Islam, peace and the welfare of the people.

On the same occasion, Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah also took the oath as Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The ceremony was conducted during the 264th Special Meeting of the Council of Rulers presided over by the Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin. Acting as witnesses to the oath of office were Sultan of Selangor Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir.

As head of government, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim read out the declaration and officially marked Sultan Ibrahim as the new Malaysian Head of State under the law and the Federal Constitution.

The ceremony was attended by Malay kings from across Malaysia and officials of the executive, legislature and judiciary.
